Dublin Airport is struggling: for several weeks now, the airport has been experiencing a series of chaotic scenes, with interminable queues, stressed and disgruntled users… not to mention the considerable number of passengers missing their flights… The cause: a shortage of supervisory staff, especially for safety checks!
Faced with its inability to fully improve the situation, the Irish army is ready to mobilize and train, to assist Dublin airport in its distress. The start of a solution!

The Irish army plans to train to cope with high tourist numbers

It’s the last straw: at a time when Ireland’s tourist season is picking up strongly, Dublin airport is unable to return to its pre-Covid-19 efficiency. Its understaffing has led to major malfunctions, with queues stretching out to the outside walkways, bottlenecks at security checkpoints, and consequent delays for aircraft, as well as numerous frustrations for passengers!

To solve the problem, Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has asked Defence Minister Simon Coveney for help. Both agreed that the Irish army should be trained and certified to ensure smooth airport services.

As a result, the army will assist the plant for a minimum of 6 weeks, to cover the summer period effectively.

Meanwhile, a Dublin Airport spokesman said on Monday that the airport was on track to meet its target of having more than 900 security guards in place by the end of June. Better still, they hope to add another 100 in July.

As a reminder, the airport laid off 25% of its staff at the height of the pandemic, and is now struggling to recruit en masse. Last month, almost 1,000 passengers missed their flights, provoking anger and frustration. Four airlines even complained to the establishment, describing the situation as unacceptable.

One thing’s for sure: the support of the Irish army should bring calm and serenity to summer travelers. What more could you ask for?
