Ireland’s Call is an Irish song used as the national anthem at Irish rugby matches, field hockey matches and cricket matches. This anthem is inter-loaned during international matches, while the official Irish anthem, known as“Amhrán na bhFiann” (The Soldier’s Song) is sung exclusively at national matches, taking place in the Republic of Ireland.
Ireland’s Call was written by Phil Coulter in 1995 at the request of the Irish Rugby Federation, which wanted to unite its supporters around a common anthem specific to rugby and Gaelic sports.
There’s a strong sense of patriotism in his lyrics, with the Irish pledging to answer “Ireland’s Call” without hesitation. The Uilleann Pipe is brilliantly used to mark Ireland’s national and cultural identity.
Come the day and come the hour
Come the power and the glory
We have come to answer
Our country’s call
Chorus :
From the four proud provinces of Ireland
Ireland, Ireland
Together standing tall
Shoulder to shoulder
We’ll answer Ireland’s call
From the mighty Glens of Antrim
From the rugged hills of Galway
From the walls of Limerick
And Dublin Bay
Chorus :
Hearts of steel
And heads unbowing
Vowing never to be broken
We will fight, until
We can fight no more
Chorus :
Ireland! Ireland!
Forever Ireland!
Come the day and come the hour
Let power and glory come
We came up with the answer
To the call of our country.
Refrain :
From Ireland’s four provinces
Ireland, Ireland
Together we face
Shoulder to shoulder
We’ll answer our country’s call
From the fearsome Glens of Antrim
To the craggy cliffs of Galway
From the walls of Limerick
And Dublin Bay
Refrain :
Heart of steel
And heads that don’t stoop
Vowing never to be broken
We fight until
We can no longer fight
Refrain :
Ireland! Ireland!
Ireland forever!
