Eureka Street is his best novel, and Robert McLiam Wilson has been described as a true writing prodigy… An avid lover of literature, Robert McLiam Wilson is an Irish writer famous for his offbeat stories and his talent for describing the city where he was born: Belfast. Contemporary author Robert McLiam Wilson is considered by critics to be one of the most gifted Irish writers of our time!
Robert Mc Liam Wilson was born in Belfast in 1964. During this period, his family lived in Catholic working-class neighborhoods, where life was sometimes difficult. Robert spent most of his childhood there, hanging out with the other kids in the neighborhood, discovering Belfast from every angle… This passion for the city never left him, and even influenced his later novels.
At school, Robert McLiam Wilson excelled in literature, and his passion for words led him to leave Belfast for London, to continue his studies at Cambridge.
In 1988, Robert McLiam Wilson penned his first novel, “Ripley Bogle”, and went on to enjoy an unexpected success. His novel tells the autobiography of a lazy, stubborn homeless man living in London, who is content to live his life by telling the most blatant lies.
From then on, critics hailed him as a young writing prodigy, and in the UK he won the Trask, Rooney, Hughes and Irish Book awards. A great honour for a writer of his calibre!
In 1992, Robert McLiam Wilson published a new novel entitled “Manfred’s Pain”. The audience gave it a warm welcome, though not as much as for “Ripley Bogle”.
However, 1996 was a key year in his career as a writer: he wrote the fabulous “Eureka Street”, a highly inspired novel in which he evoked the lives of a host of characters in the city of Belfast. Humor, cynicism and romance are all present, making this a must-see work in the eyes of the critics. Very quickly, “Eureka Street” rocketed to the top of the bestseller lists in Britain and Ireland, with many claiming it to be McLiam Wilson’s best novel to date.
In 2005, the author published another novel, this time entitled “Les Dépossédés”. The response was equally positive, confirming his talent and consistency. Many are now eagerly awaiting his next works…perhaps we won’t have to wait too long… ;-)
