In Ireland, you’ll regularly hear the expression“Pub Grub“. This is nothing more nor less than a way of referring to “pub food”, the traditional dishes served in all simplicity in most of the island’s Irish pubs. Irish stew, fish and chips, colcannon… These are the typical dishes that make up the “Pub Grub”, and which will introduce you to Ireland’s gastronomic heritage!

In Ireland, we love simple, no-frills dishes that get straight to the point.

And that’s what Irish cuisine is all about!

And on the Emerald Isle, many Irish pubs offer dishes on their menus, as well as serving drinks.

These are usually the great Irish classics, such as fish and chips, coddle, bangers and mash, crab claws, smoked salmon… and so on.

And all these dishes are often grouped together in the “Pub Grub” category.
A way of highlighting their simplicity, but also their conviviality. Because let’s face it: these are undoubtedly the best dishes in Irish gastronomy!

The best way to learn about Irish cooking at a low price

Expect to pay between €10 and €15 for Irish pub food. Dishes are generally hearty, superbly cooked and made with local ingredients.

Perfect for an introduction to local flavors.

Be sure to try the Kerry lamb, Irish stew, local cheese platters, homemade burgers and seafood platters. Because that’s what pub grub is all about!

A term to be used in a certain context

If you want to make a discreet nod to the Irish, don’t hesitate to use this term.
It shows your knowledge of Irish cuisine. But beware: of course, it’s only to be used in the pub!

Although the term is in no way demeaning, it could be unwelcome in a more traditional restaurant.

Use it with friends, or in an Irish pub only, to avoid offending anyone’s sensibilities!

An expression that also applies in England

Please note: the expression pub grub is not unique to Ireland.

In England too, it refers to the culinary specialities of Shakespeare’s homeland, served in local pubs.
