The immersive project across Derry is delayed, while the Tower Museum exhibition remains open.

In the streets of Derry, the humour of Derry Girls has already left its mark. Fans of the series will nevertheless have to wait before discovering the new immersive trail planned across the city: its launch, initially expected in October 2026, is now being targeted for March 2027.

Derry Girls trail expected later than planned

March 2027 is a target, not a final opening date

On 25 October 2026, The Times reported that Derry City and Strabane District Council is now considering a launch in March 2027. The newspaper cited the council, which said the work was at an advanced stage. For now, this remains a prospect rather than a firm timetable: it is best to wait for an official announcement before planning a trip around this new attraction.

The public tender published by the council describes a self-guided immersive digital trail linking locations across the city. Its aim is to extend the experience of the series beyond a single building, connecting Derry with the fiction that introduced it to a new audience.

Can you already visit the world of Derry Girls?

The Tower Museum is still welcoming fans

The delay to the trail does not mean that the world of the series has disappeared from Derry. The Derry Girls Experience exhibition is still listed among the current exhibitions at the Tower Museum, on Union Hall Place, inside the city walls.

Visit Derry mentions original props, costumes and a recreation of the Quinn family home. Visitors can therefore rediscover objects associated with the characters while exploring the city walls and streets that give Derry its character.

Before setting off, check the museum’s opening hours and ticketing information: an existing exhibition and a new trail in preparation are two distinct experiences, and may develop separately.

Why the series matters so much to Derry

A comedy rooted in real history

Created by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls follows a group of teenagers in the 1990s, against the backdrop of the Troubles and the peace process. Its strength lies in this balance: family concerns, friendships and school disasters take centre stage, while the wider history remains present around the characters.

For travellers, exploring Derry helps place the fiction in a broader context. Visiting the city walls, museums and neighbourhoods offers a chance to look beyond the television references, taking time to listen to local stories and understand the complexity of this history.

Sources consulted on 27 October 2026: The Times, Derry City and Strabane District Council public tender, Tower Museum and Visit Derry. The trail’s date remains to be confirmed.
