Recipe: The hot apple cider

Ingredients

  • 1 liter apple cider (preferably non-alcoholic)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 whole nutmeg or 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 orange, sliced 1
  • 00 ml Irish whiskey (optional)
  • Honey, maple syrup or brown sugar to taste

Preparation

  • Preparing the spices
    Pour the apple cider into a large saucepan. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg and orange slices.
  • Heat
    Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  • Whiskey addition (Optional)
    If desired, add Irish whiskey and stir well. Sweeten to taste Taste the cider and add honey, maple syrup or brown sugar to taste for sweetness.
  • Service
    Strain the cider to remove spices and residues. Serve warm in mugs or hollowed-out apples (for best effect), garnished with a cinnamon stick or orange slice if desired.
