The eponymous distillery dates back to 1870, when John Jameson, a Dublin entrepreneur, decided to launch his own whiskey production using malted and unmalted barley. He moved to the industrial district of Smithfield Village in Dublin, set up his vats and distilling equipment, and embarked on his adventure.

The result today is impressive: after more than a century in operation, the alcohol produced is reaching record levels in terms of sales and export production. Jameson whiskey is as well-known as it is widely consumed, and its reputation has spread far beyond Ireland’s borders.

Due to its success, the distillery and brand were acquired by Irish Distillers, an Irish subsidiary of the Pernod-Ricard group, and is one of the top ten best-selling whiskeys in the world (ranked ninth).

Jameson Whiskey specificities

Subtly caramelized aromas…

Jameson whiskey is produced the Irish way, using triple distillation techniques. It is produced using a blend of malted and unmalted barley. This barley is then dried in kilns and distilled 3 times in a gigantic still. Only then is it stored in casks for a set number of years.

Once bottled, the whiskey doesn’t age at all, and is ready for consumption. Enthusiasts particularly appreciate its color and slightly caramelized aroma.

There are several types of Jameson:

  • Jameson premium: the best-known and least expensive, appreciated for its smoothness and fragrance.
  • Jameson 12 Year Old: stored in sherry casks to give it its distinctive flavour.
  • Jameson 18 Year Old: sometimes stored in bourbon and sherry casks, this whiskey is one of the brand’s most expensive. It’s also harder to find, but is unanimously acclaimed by connoisseurs.
