Black Velvet is a famous Irish cocktail, made with champagne and Guinness Irish beer. It’s an explosive, almost indecent mix that may surprise you!
Created by the bartender at Brook’s club in London, this cocktail is now a classic, and a great way to revisit Guinness beer! Drink in moderation, of course…
Black Velvet combines 2 extravagant beverages: Guinness and Champagne! The perfect way to fill up on fine bubbles for a good time! Served in flute glasses, this cocktail has an international reputation, and is even nicknamed “Tiger’s Milk” in India!
For its composition, Black Velvet works on a so-for-so basis (5cl champagne to 5cl Guinness). Note that the cocktail works with other brands of Irish brown ale, but the real Black Velvet would essentially call for Guinness!
Served in a flute glass, the cocktail appears to be cut in 2, with a brown gradation fading to transparent. As if champagne and beer refuse to mix!
The cocktail is surprisingly tasty, and can be tasted in Irish Pubs. Expect to pay less than €5 a flute: a bit steep, but that’s the price for an original cocktail with an Irish accent!
On the palate, it’s an explosion of bubbles and bitterness. The champagne supports the coffee and caramel notes of the Guinness. The balance is there, but the result is surprising.
Best drunk on special occasions: Black Velvet is meant to be festive, and made for happy occasions (weddings, christenings, birthdays…etc.). A must-try if you’re curious and not afraid of unusual combinations. Always in moderation, of course.
