Gastro Pub is a term used to describe gourmet pubs serving strong beer and fine food. You’ll find them just about everywhere in Ireland, and their prices are often much lower than those of the island’s restaurants. A convivial way to combine a bar atmosphere with that of a family restaurant!

Le Gastro-Pub

An establishment halfway between brasserie and restaurant

Gastro pub is a recent term that has only been around since the 20th century. Before that, pubs only served alcohol, accompanied by cold dishes based on oysters, whelks, mussels or shrimps. Late in the evening, it was common to come across a few hawkers selling off their seafood stocks to pub-goers.

These days, two terms are used to describe a Pub’s level of service:

  • Gastro Pub: a pub that serves hot food as well as spirits.
  • and the Pub Grub: which refers to a Pub serving Irish gastronomic specialities such as Fish and Chips, Irish Stew, Irish Breakfast, homemade Burgers… etc.

The more a pub is defined as a Gastro Pub, the higher its level of quality in terms of meals served. The cuisine here is fine, subtle, revisiting the classics of local gastronomy, using local Irish produce.

On the price side, expect to pay around €12 per person for a dish. Desserts are often available depending on the formula.
