Dublin: residents hang coats from the Ha’Penny Bridge for the homeless
Le Ha'Penny Bridge et ses manteaux solidaires à Dublin

A great initiative was launched this week in Dublin. Some Dubliners decided to hang up their unused coats on Dublin’s Ha’Penny Bridge, so that the homeless could help themselves. The aim: to offer free coats that Dubliners no longer need, so that the homeless can spend the winter as warm as possible.

And so, on Dublin’s most famous bridge, numerous signs explain the concept: “If you need one, take one. If you want to help, hang one.”

And it’s already a huge success! Several dozen winter jackets were generously hung on the bridge as a sign of solidarity. Coats of all sizes and colors, as well as hats, caps, scarves and gloves were also deposited in a large box nearby.

The gesture is part of the “Warm for Winter” operation, which aims to help Dublin’s homeless during the coldest winter months. The man behind the project is Patrick Fryers, and he hopes the initiative will be replicated in the rest of Ireland.

Even if it’s just one coat, take it where you think someone might need it and hang it up,” he said. Imagine if everyone did the same thing!

It’s a fine deed, and shows just how generous the Irish can be. A way of protesting against the treatment of Dublin’s homeless, while helping to improve their daily lives during the cold season.
