Michael Davitt Bridge is usually a route through: you cross it to reach Achill and continue on your way. At Easter, however, it is where people stop. During the last edition of the Island Life Festival, local organisations, sports clubs and volunteers crossed it in procession to the start of the greenway. The parade sets the tone for a weekend in which the island and the Currane Peninsula tell their story through the people who live there.
The Island Life Festival brings together local culture, heritage and outdoor activities. It takes place on Achill Island and on the Currane Peninsula, in County Mayo. Achill Sound is the best landmark for a first visit: this is where the Easter parade takes place, at the far end of the bridge linking the island to the mainland.
The parade has a special place in the weekend. In 2026, the procession brought together local groups, businesses and clubs before concerts took place near the greenway. The programme for that edition also shows how the festival extends beyond the parade: it included a book launch at Halla Acla and events in the villages on the island and in Currane.
The Achill Tourism calendar announces the festival from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 March 2027, with the parade in Achill Sound on Easter Sunday. The starting time, detailed route and rest of the programme have not yet been announced. The festival website still features the 2026 edition: its timings give an idea of how the event runs, but do not apply to 2027.
If you are only spending one day on Achill, Sunday is the best choice for seeing the parade. To enjoy activities in the villages as well, wait for the programme and group your stops by area. In 2026, some outdoor activities were cancelled or moved because of bad weather. Allow for some flexibility if you are planning a walk or an activity on the beach.
On parade day, check the traffic and parking information as soon as it is published. If you are planning to cross the bridge by car, avoid basing your day around getting through at a specific time. With young children, choose an observation point that is easy to reach and bring a waterproof layer: you may end up staying outside longer than expected.
