The Macnas Halloween Parade

La grande parade de Macnas à Galway

Every autumn, strange creatures take over the streets of Galway. Monumental puppets, musicians, dancers and characters from Irish folklore make their way through the city to the beat of drums: welcome to the Macnas Halloween Parade, one of Ireland’s most spectacular Halloween events.

In 2026, the parade will take on special significance. Macnas will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a new show entitled Fiáin, an Irish word that can be translated as ‘wild’. The parade is scheduled for Sunday 25 October 2026 and will be free to attend.

Macnas Halloween Parade 2026 in Galway

Fiáin, a show dedicated to wild Ireland

The 2026 Macnas Halloween Parade will take place on Sunday 25 October, during Ireland’s October bank holiday weekend. This new production, named Fiáin, will celebrate the landscapes, natural forces and untamed spirit of western Ireland.

As is often the case with Macnas, the theme is unlikely to be treated literally. The company likes to transform traditional tales and elements of the natural world into fantastical creatures—sometimes wondrous, sometimes unsettling.

Visitors can therefore expect giant figures inspired by animals, legends, the Atlantic Ocean and the wild landscapes of Connemara. The full storyline and characters for this edition will be revealed gradually by the organisers.

What is the Macnas Halloween Parade?

Fantastic open-air theatre

The Macnas Halloween Parade is far more than a simple costumed procession. It is a fully fledged theatrical production created for public spaces.

Each edition brings together monumental puppets, actors, dancers, musicians and street performers. The characters move through the crowd in a succession of living tableaux, accompanied by percussion and live musical compositions.

Spectators do not simply see a series of floats: they witness a story in motion. Costumes, lights, sound and choreography transform Galway’s streets into a fantastical world.

The show is generally suitable for all the family. Some creatures may, however, prove impressive for young children, particularly as night falls, the drums resound and the puppets rise above the crowd.

Macnas, a company born in Galway

Forty years of monumental creations

Macnas is a theatre and street-performance company founded in Galway in 1986. Its name roughly means ‘play’, ‘entertainment’ or ‘rejoicing’ in Irish.

The collective became known for its huge articulated puppets, extravagant costumes and highly personal approach to reinventing myths. Its productions have been staged in Ireland as well as at numerous international events.

The 2026 edition will therefore mark the company’s 40th anniversary. The Fiáin parade will be one of the highlights of the celebrations, alongside other projects whose details are due to be announced during the autumn.

This longstanding relationship between Macnas and Galway explains why the parade holds such particular importance for the city. Artists, craftspeople, volunteers and local residents all help to prepare a show deeply connected to the cultural identity of western Ireland.

Halloween and Irish traditions

A show inspired by the legacy of Samhain

The presence of a major Halloween parade in Galway is no coincidence. The modern Halloween festival has some of its origins in Samhain, an ancient celebration marking the end of the light season and the beginning of winter.

In Irish traditions, this period was seen as a time of transition. The boundary between the world of the living and that of spirits became more fragile, allowing supernatural creatures to venture among humankind.

Macnas regularly draws on this imaginative world. Monsters, fantastical animals, spirits and mythological figures are reinterpreted in a contemporary visual language. The result is more reminiscent of a great nocturnal tale than a conventional horror attraction.

Macnas Parade 2026 route

An itinerary to be confirmed before the event

The final route for the Fiáin parade has not yet been announced. The streets used, the exact start time and any areas reserved for families or people with reduced mobility will be announced at a later date.

In previous editions, the parade generally passed through Galway city centre, including the areas around the University of Galway, the cathedral, Eglinton Street, Shop Street and Dominick Street, before reaching the Claddagh area.

This former route is provided for guidance only and should not be regarded as the official 2026 route.

For final details, consult the official Macnas website and Galway City communications a few days before your visit.

Where should you stand to watch the parade?

Arrive early to enjoy the show

The Macnas Halloween Parade usually draws tens of thousands of spectators. The narrower streets in the city centre can therefore become particularly crowded.

Once the 2026 route has been published, identify a sufficiently open area in advance and aim to arrive between 60 and 90 minutes before the parade is due to pass. Families with young children may wish to avoid the busiest junctions and particularly narrow streets.

Do not follow the floats or cross the road between the different tableaux. The giant puppets need plenty of space to move, while some structures may be accompanied by technical vehicles that are difficult to see in the dark.

Planning your evening in Galway

Transport, weather and practical advice

Traffic restrictions and temporary street closures are to be expected on the day of the parade. It is best to leave your car outside the very centre and reach the route on foot or by public transport.

Galway Ceannt Station is immediately adjacent to the city centre. It provides easy access to Galway by train or coach, but check the last departures in advance if you are not staying overnight.

Bring warm clothing, waterproofs and comfortable shoes. Galway can be wet and windy at the end of October. In a dense crowd, a hooded jacket will also be more practical than an umbrella.

After the parade, the pubs of the Latin Quarter and West End generally keep the Halloween atmosphere going. They fill up quickly, however, so it is best to book a table several days ahead if you plan to have dinner.
