The Galway International Oyster Festival is an Irish festival held every September in the city of Galway. It’s a celebration of the resumption of the oyster season, a tasty dish that is one of the great specialties of Irish gastronomy. Enjoy delicious oysters while sipping Guinness and listening to Irish music! Doesn’t that make you want to?
Irish oysters – viledevil
The Galway Oyster Festival is above all a gastronomic festival. And where there’s gastronomy, there’s tasting! You’ll also be able to sample some of the best Irish oysters in the city’s restaurants, and at the Festival itself.
Traditionally, the dozen oysters are served with a creamy pint of Irish stout.
Expect to pay around €15-20 per person per dozen oysters. The dish is usually served with an Irish beer (preferably dark), and can be enjoyed at any time of the day or night, to the delight of our taste buds!
More often than not, the Festival takes the opportunity to enhance the meal with traditional Irish music. Even dancing is welcome, and you can discover the beauty of Irish folklore while enjoying its gastronomic riches!
But there’s more to the Festival than music and oyster orgies. The Festival also likes to organize 2 championships each year, entirely dedicated to opening oysters in record time! This is the :
The competition is tough, and every victory at these championships goes into the Guinness Book of Records…
Oysters aren’t just good to eat: they’re also of great interest when it comes to pearl oysters. That’s why the Galway Festival also organizes a competition to award a prize to the young woman who finds the most beautiful pearl among the pearl oysters grown in the region.
Only the most beautiful pearl will be awarded to one of the participants, giving him or her the privilege of being invited to all the festival’s events. What’s more, a prize worth over €500 is awarded to the winner, and the winner’s face becomes the official face of the festival.
Suffice to say, it can be an enjoyable experience!
The Festival also organizes another event: a gala, often held on Saturday evening, in a prestigious Galway hotel (often the Meyrick Hotel). You can dance the night away, and enjoy oysters with champagne, or the eternal pint of Guinness. A good-natured atmosphere, and exceptional quality food!
