In Ireland, we love scones… and it’s even better when they’re accompanied by Clotted Cream, a delicious thick cream that’s spread generously on the bread! This typically Anglo-Saxon product is one of the island’s must-have specialties: it’s considered a must-have for the breakfast table, and even for tea-time snacks. A must for gourmets!
Clotted cream generally takes the form of a thick, slightly lumpy fresh cream.
It’s made from cow’s milk, which is first heated and then left to rest for several hours. The result is a curd with astonishingly addictive flavours!
The result is Clottedcream. From the outside, the cream appears ultra-thick, and is usually spread with a knife like softened butter.
The cream tastes soft and enveloping. A real delight! But be warned: this delight of the gods is ultra-rich: it’s a veritable concentrate of fat (which is why we love it). A wise choice if you tend to watch your weight.
But let me tell you: to deprive yourself of such a delicacy would be a real crime. This cream adds the finishing touch to a scone. Without it, this pastry can sometimes seem outdated, even a little sad….
True fans will tell you: you can’t enjoy Irish scones without that famous clotted cream. We’d be depriving ourselves of the best!
Note that in this particular case, this cream alone replaces traditional butter, but coexists perfectly with a little jam. Trust us: it’s the perfect combo!
It’s worth noting that most supermarkets in Ireland sell these products. You’ll pay less than €5 a jar: but you’ll need to eat it quickly after opening, and keep it refrigerated (after all, it’s still cream!).
A wide range of bed and breakfasts, hotels and tea rooms are available. Sometimes their cream is handmade, which makes it all the more worthwhile! In such cases, it’s out of the question to hesitate and think about dieting: it’s time to indulge!
