Porridge is a dish of Anglo-Saxon origin made from oats, milk (or water), all prepared in the form of an often unpalatable “porridge”… Don’t be fooled by appearances: even if porridge isn’t very presentable, it’s generally very good, and is a well-balanced, grain-rich dish that’s very popular in Ireland!
Historically speaking, porridge is a typically Scottish dish. But the Irish have quickly taken to eating it for breakfast in the morning…and recognize its benefits!
Very fashionable, this dish is renowned for its healthy properties. Made from oats and barley, it provides fiber and essential nutrients for the body. A balanced start to the day that will last until lunchtime!
This is generally a base which is then spiced up with a handful of oilseeds (peanuts, cashews, etc.), fruit, chocolate or grated coconut. We also add peanut butter for an extra touch of indulgence.
It’s all a question of imagination: the ingredients are numerous, and the combinations can create a veritable explosion in the mouth! Agave syrup, honey, fruit, goji berries… Anything is possible!
The Irish turn to porridge when they don’t necessarily have time to make a full Irish breakfast. It can be made more quickly: a saucepan, a little milk and water, oats… and it’s ready in less than 10 minutes! It is also possible to make an accelerated version in the microwave…
