Belfast has its own culinary speciality. We’re talking about the Belfast Bap, a large burger that combines all the ingredients of an Irish breakfast! Egg, sausage, bacon, hashbrown, blackpudding… The result is an absolutely monstrous sandwich: not only hard to grab, but also hard to eat… but still a pure delight! Perfect for breakfast lovers who don’t shy away!
I might as well warn you: the Belfast Bap is a kind of one-upmanship of the traditional Irish breakfast. Designed for good eaters who don’t have time to waste, it helps settle the stomach and give you peace of mind for the rest of the day!
But don’t be intimidated by its size and number of ingredients. The Belfast Bap is well worth a taste! The egg and the bread (halfway between a bun and a muffin) harmonize perfectly with the bacon, and the potato pancake adds a deliciously crunchy touch.
Note that there are variations with sauces (depending on the establishment). Some add ketchup or mustard… Sometimes even barbecue sauce. (It’s all a question of desire and imagination!).
This type of dish is usually eaten in the morning, in Belfast’s restaurants, cafés and Irish pubs. Economical, it’s part of the local habit to get the day off to a good start. But don’t forget to allow a little time to get the hang of it: Belfast Bap isn’t about lightness or healthy cooking!
Note that this specialty is sometimes nicknamed the Cave Hill Belfast Bap: a reference to a mountain overlooking the city of Belfast. Nice metaphor, especially when you discover the size of the “burger”!
