Spotlight on Fungie: this famous Irish dolphin, living free in Dingle Bay, has just achieved a feat that will be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Apparently, he’s the oldest dolphin in the world! (based on the publication of a 2019 report by the Marine Connection charity).

Living in Dingle waters for 36 years, it was first spotted off the Irish coast of Kerry in 1983. According to experts, Fungie would be at least 40 years old, an incredible age when you consider that dolphins of the same species live an average of about 15 years!

Over the past 30 years, this dolphin has become a veritable mascot and symbol for the town of Dingle. He’s always been very playful, and has always enjoyed rubbing shoulders with the tourist boats, much to the delight of the travellers who’ve come to see him!

He’s made a real name for himself, creating a real attraction for tourists: playing in the waves, jumping, asking to be petted. Fungie has always been surprisingly friendly for a wild dolphin!

In any case, this new longevity record is yet another reason to go and see this famous dolphin! Meet him in Dingle!
