The island is famous for its ancient 7th-century monastery. It is said to have been founded by Saint Féichín, when the island was occupied by a handful of inhabitants (around 70 people). The monastery is magnificent, and has the particularity of having been built right next to a freshwater lake.

Important information: although the monastery is located on a private island… It is nevertheless the responsibility of the Ministry of Environmental Heritage and Local Government: a way of protecting the site, and ensuring that no private individual will ever destroy it. It’s important to understand that by purchasing this island, you won’t be the official owner of the monastery.

Another important piece of information: the monastery is not the only historical vestige on the island. Countless ruins and artefacts dating from between 10,000 BC and 300 AD have been found all over High Island. Ancient dry-stone huts have been identified not far from the monastery.

What’s more, the Irish island is reputed to be home to rare and endangered birds. There are also peregrine falcons, wild geese, fulmars…etc.

High Island is far from being just another island. It’s a truly unique site, offering an unspoilt glimpse of Ireland as it was centuries ago.

It’s not often you get the chance to own a place like this. But the price can be a deterrent. High Island is advertised on the Myhome.ie website for the modest sum of 1.25 million euros. A substantial budget, but one that makes you dream!
