It’s the news of the moment that’s causing a sensation in Ireland! An Irish beach on Achill Island that once disappeared has just reappeared, more than 33 years later! A real curiosity, which had the whole village of Dooagh in an uproar, fascinated by this strange phenomenon.
It has to be said that the beach had been swept away in 1984, following a terrible storm, suddenly erasing the sand from the beach, revealing only sad rocks. But the weather conditions of recent weeks, coupled with the wind and tides, have brought sand back to the once forgotten beach. A true environmental renaissance!
“In April, around Easter, we had a dry cold and a wind from the north,” recalls Sean Molloy, manager at Achill Tourism.”
This would have covered the rocks with several million tonnes of sand, creating a magnificent beach nearly 300 metres long! And the result is a happy one for the people of Dooagh! Not only have they rediscovered their lost beach, but they’re now seeing an upsurge in tourists who’ve come to admire the phenomenon! A godsend for the islanders, who have always made a living from tourism!
“There are a lot of people arriving now. I have a small café here and since the news broke, people have been calling every day to see the beach”. explains owner Alan Gielty to The Independent. “It’s great to look out and see this beautiful beach instead of just rocks”.
One thing’s for sure: this summer, tourists and locals alike are planning to make the most of Dooagh Beach!
