He was the mascot of the village of Dingle (Co. Kerry) in Ireland. This wild dolphin, which liked to play with tourist boats in Dingle Bay, has unfortunately been missing for 5 days. An unusual phenomenon, which aroused the concern of local residents. Many hope to see him again, while others speculate that he is dead…

Fungie, a dolphin that loves human company

Until now, the mammal had never disappeared for so long.

Fungie, Ireland’s most famous dolphin, has been missing for over 5 days. The latter used to swim in the calm waters of Dingle, and play with the local fishing boats. A habit dating back to 1983! Not a day went by that a boat didn’t catch a glimpse of the dolphin’s fin.

His absence over the last 5 days may well raise questions…

A search for him began this week. Organized by Jimmy Flannery (who runs the Dingle Sea Safari, a tourist attraction where you can meet Fungie), the search involved many participants, including Mallow Search and Rescue Divers, the Dingle Dolphin Tour, local fishing boats and other volunteer vessels. All are very attached to the dolphin, and hope to learn more about its worrying disappearance.

To no avail.

At this stage, we cancel the next searches. We’re hoping that Fungie is just off on an adventure. If he wishes, he’ll come back to us one day. said Jimmy Flannery.

An optimistic statement, but one that does not rule out the eventual death of the dauphin. At 37 years of age, the mammal had never before disappeared for so long. A situation that remains mysterious and painful for regulars: will local fishermen and tourism professionals ever see Fungie again? A question that may never be answered…
