Climate change, plastic pollution of the oceans, increasingly polluting mass transport… The global situation is increasingly worrying these days, and it’s a sad fact that tourism is inevitably one of the contributing factors…

The cause: tourism that is sometimes too invasive and excessive, where certain incivilities radically transform the environment of the country visited…

Although Ireland is less affected than other countries by mass tourism, it has decided to promote a completely new type of tourism: sustainable or responsible tourism. A simple principle that seems to win over most tourists who come to discover the green Ireland.

The principle is simple: minimize the environmental impact of your trip (carbon footprint) by following a few common-sense rules:

  • choose your mode of transport logically, depending on your trip and what you want to explore,
  • dispose of your garbage in the garbage cans, not in the environment,
  • promote local consumption patterns,
  • select a responsible accommodation, powered by renewable energy,
  • ..etc.

Simple rules that, contrary to popular belief, are far from restrictive – quite the contrary!

Discover Connemara by bike, explore the surrounding area on foot, taste the best of the local produce: it’s all very appealing! It’s a way to commune with nature and get in touch with the locals in an authentic way, without depriving yourself!

And the formula seems to be a hit! In Ireland, eco-responsible tourists are on the rise! Bicycle rental rates are skyrocketing for both city and country tours, hiking in protected areas is on the increase, and the country is seeing a clear drop in the number of polluting incivilities on beaches and other natural sites!
Not to mention local gastronomy, which is increasingly geared towards organic produce, and eco-friendly accommodation that uses sustainable energies such as solar and geothermal power… etc.

In short, an eco-friendly tourist is often a happy tourist, who not only saves money, but also enjoys an ethical and authentic trip!
