That’s today’s good news. Humpback whales, first recorded by researchers in 1999, have just resurfaced off County Kerry in Ireland, almost 20 years after they were first recorded!

These whales swam alongside 2 younger specimens. It’s an incredible discovery, and one that is particularly astonishing to researchers.

It’s amazing to see these 2 whales alive again after 20 years. It has to be said that the state of the ocean can be a real problem for their longevity: the ocean is increasingly frequented by boats, fishing nets are causing major damage and plastic pollution is a real danger. It’s a miracle these whales are still alive. It must be the rather peaceful south coast of Ireland and the abundance of food that attracts them year after year,” said the researcher who recrossed the whales.

The phenomenon occurred last week, when an expedition formed by Simon Berrow and Frances Bermingham was simply to record whale songs off the Irish coast.

That’s when they spotted 4 humpback whales, including the 2 famous ones already known since 1999.

A lovely discovery that seems to confirm that Irish waters are very popular with these whales!
