A big bad-buzz for Juliette Armanet, who recently decided to make known her distaste for Michel Sardou’s famous song “Les Lacs du Connemara”. For the French artist, this emblematic track is a song that “disgusts (her)”, whose “music is filthy”. The icing on the cake: for the singer, it would even be a “right-wing” singer… It’s enough to set off a storm of controversy!

When Juliette Armanet plays the provocation card…

Triggering a torrent of hatred towards the artist…

It’s a story that touches Ireland from afar, but is very close to French culture and its musical heritage. Juliette Armanet certainly didn’t think she’d unleash such an outcry when she attacked a monument to French chanson (dedicated to a famous region of Ireland)!

It all happened during an interview on Belgian RTBF media Tipik, on Saturday August 5, 2023. The young woman didn’t mince her words, criticizing Michel Sardou and one of his most popular songs with force and conviction.

When asked which songs would make her leave a party, she is said to have repeatedly replied “Les Lacs du Connemara”. For the artist, it was a song that“disgusts” her, with a“scouting, sectarian side” and whose“music is filthy“. A“right-wing song, nothing goes“, she reportedly concluded.

That was all it took for his comments to be perceived in France as a veritable provocation. These assertions provoked a reaction on social networks, where Internet users expressed their indignation at the violence of Juliette Armanet’s criticisms. And most of the comments are far from kind!

Even Jacques Revaux, the composer of the song with Michel Sardou, hit back on BFMTV. And these comments are also very violent:

I’ve never come across such a filthy person,” he declared. I don’t know who she thinks she is (…) She has good songs, she sings very well, but she’d better shut up.

This 1981 song is an integral part of France’s cultural and musical heritage. Considered THE perfect song for a festive evening, it doesn’t seem to have aged a bit!

Although it’s clearly not to Juliette Armanet’s taste, this song, composed by two great French artists, is a timeless success. Dedicated to the Connemara region of Ireland, its cadenced rhythm and bagpipes (which remain Scottish, not Irish) remain a classic to which the French seem attached. It’s an opportunity to highlight Irish history and culture, as well as the unique beauty of the country’s wide open spaces.

One thing’s for sure: with this bad buzz, the French have done everything they can to make Juliette Armanet understand that she shouldn’t touch monuments like “Les Lacs du Connemara”.
