Celtic Woman

Celtic Woman is an Irish Celtic music group made up of 3 singers, a fiddler and a composer. Founded in 2004, the group has since become a worldwide sensation for its Irish-sounding songs…

History of Celtic Woman

A collective of female singers, determined to pay tribute to Ireland

It all began in 2004, when David Downes, an Irish composer, decided to compose for a collective of female singers already performing on the international scene.

At the time, David Downes was an Irish composer and musical director, renowned for his work with the Riverdance show.

He came up with the idea of creating a band that would combine traditional Celtic music with elements of modern music.

To this end, he brought together a group of talented female singers, each with a background in music or theater, to form the band.

The concept is to showcase Irish vocal and musical talent through performances that combine song, music and dance, in a style that is both traditional and contemporary.

He then contacted Lisa Kelly, Chloë Agnew and Lisa Lambe, to whom he added violinist Mairead Nesbitt.

Debuts

Celtic Woman's success has been built up gradually, thanks to a unique combination of talent, musical choices and stage presentation. Right from the start, the band manages to touch audiences with its harmonious blend of traditional Irish music and contemporary styles, underpinned by top-notch vocal and instrumental performances.

The band gained in popularity, both in Ireland and internationally.

Their breakthrough was reinforced by numerous television appearances, including special concerts broadcast on PBS in the USA.

These shows have greatly contributed to their popularity, bringing them to the attention of a wide audience. What's more, their international tours, which featured both visual and acoustic shows, consolidated their reputation and expanded their fan base.

The quality of their studio recordings, as well as the regular release of albums and DVDs, has also played a crucial role in their continued success.
A band that appeals to Irish people and Irish expatriates alike!

Celtic Woman, with its spellbinding blend of traditional Irish music and contemporary styles, has won over not only hearts in Ireland but also those of Irish expatriates around the world. Their music, which captures the essence of Irish culture, resonates deeply with Irish people, reminding them of their heritage and roots.

For expatriates, Celtic Woman offers a nostalgic link with their homeland, a sense of connection with their cultural identity. Whether through their melodies or their emotionally charged performances, Celtic Woman has succeeded in becoming a symbol of pride and joy for Irish people everywhere.

A band whose line-up is constantly evolving!

Since its inception, Celtic Woman has seen many talented artists come and go over the years. Initially, the group consisted of Lisa Kelly, Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and violinist Máiréad Nesbitt. Over the years, other artists such as Lynn Hilary, Alex Sharpe, Éabha McMahon, Mairéad Carlin, Tara McNeill, and more recently Muirgen O'Mahony and Emma Warren, have also been part of the group.
