Renowned Irish actor Liam Neeson has made it clear that he would like to see a united Ireland within the next few years. An Ireland without borders, where Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would live under a global entity, far removed from today’s geopolitical markers. And for Liam Neeson, there’s no doubt about it: he expects to see this huge breakthrough in his lifetime.

Liam Nesson, optimistic about Ireland’s future

Unification is possible, “if every opinion is heard and respected”.

The 70-year-old star spoke about the possibility of a united Ireland in an interview with Sky News journalist Beth Rigby, while presenting his new film “Marlowe”.

For the actor, things are conceivable: for him, a united Ireland is still a “united Ireland”.realistic possibility, as long as everyone’s opinions are respected. The Protestant voice must also be heard.“.

I think it will happen,” he told Rigby. I think it could happen, but everyone needs to be calm. The Protestants of Northern Ireland have a strong voice – I hear them, I know where they come from – and they must be respected. If there is to be a united Ireland, their voice must be heard and they must be represented if a united Ireland is to come into being.

Liam Neeson hails from the Protestant town of Ballymena in Northern Ireland, where he grew up in a Catholic family. The latter has had to deal with the Northern Ireland conflict for a long time, from phases of tension to acts of violence… via the Good Friday Agreements.

For the actor, these agreements are still widely respected by the majority in Northern Ireland.

Everyone wants it, certainly in the north of Ireland.

These particularly committed statements demonstrate the actor’s deep attachment to his native land. Much loved in Ireland, the actor is one of the country’s most popular figures, and has never ceased to speak out on the Northern Ireland question.

A case in point is his participation in the masterly film “Five minutes to heaven”, in which he co-stars opposite James Nesbitt. A powerful film, in which each side speaks out on the issue of Northern Ireland, communitarianism and violence.

Although for some the idea of a united Ireland seems more like utopia, Liam Neeson seems hopeful, and convinced of a real possibility. Perhaps these statements will raise awareness of the issue… and facilitate debate…

The years to come will tell us more about it!
