Margaret Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister, died on Monday April 8, following a stroke. At the age of 87, she leaves behind a controversial political career to say the least.

Called “The Iron Lady”, she was known for her unwavering intransigence and ultra-liberal ideologies. Unwilling to compromise, during her 11 years in office (1979-1990) she set about rebuilding the United Kingdom, while advocating the most conservative values of the time.

While praised for raising England to the top of the economic league, she was also infamous for her outspoken stance on Northern Ireland. Thus, the hunger strikes by IRA prisoners in the early 80s found no echo in the Iron Lady, who preferred to turn a deaf ear to Bobby Sands’ demands. The latter died after more than 60 days of fasting, without the Prime Minister’s voice being heard… The aim of these hunger strikes was to have the IRA members locked up at Long Kesh recognized as political prisoners.

Margaret Thatcher thus leaves behind her a controversial career in half-tone… A ceremony will take place in less than 10 days at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, followed by a private cremation to pay her last respects… Military honors will be paid, but there will be no state funeral…
