The famous rock magazine Rolling Stone has published its list of the world’s top 200 singers. And good news for Ireland: Van Morrison and Bono from U2 are in the top ten! Morrison was ranked 37th, while Bono was a distant 140th. It’s a major accolade for these two Irish artists, both of whom have distinguished themselves with brilliant careers!
Since it was published, this top list of the best singers has been the talk of the town! And with good reason: this is Rolling Stone magazine’s opportunity to praise the greatest artists, and salute their contribution to the world.
And Ireland is proud: Van Morrison is the first Irishman to top the chart, climbing to 37th position! And Rolling Stone is raving about it:
“To discover the pinnacle of Van Morrison’s vocal genius, you have to go beyond words,” said the article.
The artist has become a key figure in rock, soul and jazz… and he knows how to combine it with traditional Irish music. A skilful blend that has given birth to global hits that are as danceable as they are exhilarating!
As for Bono, he came a long way behind in 140th place… but he didn’t disappoint.
It’s easy to take Bono for granted [sur notre liste] since the artist’s commendable activism and over-the-top stage persona often overshadow the reason he’s brilliant: his voice.
A nice review, sure to please U2 fans!
For the record, this top was compiled with Rolling Stone’s staff and main contributors, and was made taking into account the last 100 years of pop-rock music.
The list is made up of singers who have made or continue to make popular music for a wide audience.
“In all cases, what mattered most to us was the originality, influence and depth of an artist’s catalog and the breath of their musical heritage,” states the list’s introduction.
For the curious, here’s a look at the top twenty singers ranked by Rolling Stone. No Irish, unfortunately, but a particularly prestigious list:
