Did you know? The city of Dublin is teeming with cabs! There are more than 16,000 of them in circulation… even though the city’s population does not exceed 500,000! Dublin’s cabs are a dime a dozen, and a regular feature of Dubliners’ lives. So there’s hardly a time when you don’t come across a yellow cab in the capital: day or night, they’re there to offer you their services. To help you get around Dublin efficiently by cab, here are a few tips…

Taking a cab in Dublin

Reserve a vehicle…

Regular cab drivers won’t feel out of place in Dublin. Like everywhere else, there are two ways to reserve a car:

  • or you hail a vehicle in the middle of the street (with the risk that it’s already on the move and won’t stop).
  • or you can book by phone, to make sure you get there on time.

The first option is more for pragmatists, who won’t take offense at a refusal or two. It has to be said that there are so many cabs on the streets of Dublin that the waiting time is quite minimal. We always end up finding a car quickly.

The second option, on the other hand, is more suitable when you want to get back to the airport and be sure of reaching your destination on time.

It’s all a question of the situation and the need of the moment.

Dublin cabs can only be identified by the “cab” sign on the roof of the car. Here, the vehicle doesn’t have to be yellow: it can be any kind of car… as long as it bears the word cab on the top of the vehicle.

Here are the numbers you need to book them by phone:

  • Castle Cabs: 01 8319000
  • Checkers Cabs : 01 8343434
  • City Cabs: 01 8731122
  • Pony Cabs: 01 6612233
  • Speed Cabs : 01 4750800

Dublin cab fares

It’s important to know that Dublin drivers charge their own rates. Also, the price per kilometer can vary from one driver to another… as can the level of service (everything will depend on the vehicle, its comfort… etc.).

In any case, here’s a quick overview of the minimum rates charged in the capital:

Monday to Saturday 08h00 to 20h00 :

  • Minimum price : €4.10
  • Price per kilometer : €1.03
  • Price per minute on hold : €0.36

Monday to Saturday after 8 p.m., Sundays and public holidays

  • Minimum price : €4.45
  • Price per kilometer : €1.35
  • Price per minute of waiting time : €0.48

Supplements

  • Telephone booking : €2.
  • Additional passenger from the first : €1.
  • Tipping : Taxis expect a tip (add around 10% to the final bill).

Important: regardless of the time of year you choose to travel, fares for journeys of more than 15 km or 40 minutes are increased by up to 30% of the initial price. Good to know to avoid unpleasant surprises!

What we recommend :

As you can see, taking a cab in Dublin can be a good idea… As long as you opt for short trips. If you want to drive in the center of Dublin, you’ll get away with less than €10… Practical and economical (even if buses and Luas streetcars are more economical).

Longer journeys, on the other hand, are a different matter. A trip from Dublin city center to Dublin airport could cost as much as €40! (There are bus routes specially designed for this purpose, which will cost you 4 times less).

It’s all a question of budget and desire. Dublin cabs offer a comfort and freedom that other forms of public transport do not. But it all depends on where you’re going!
