Erasmus+ (formerly known as ERASMUS) is an exchange program offering young people under the age of 30 (graduates or not) the opportunity to spend part of their studies in another educational establishment within the countries of the European Union. Created in 2014, the new Erasmus+ program provides financial support for a wide range of actions and activities in the fields of education, training, youth and sport. Its strong international dimension in the field of higher education enables it to take part in institutional cooperation activities and to promote mobility worldwide.

The latest figures published in January 2020 by the European Commission show a positive balance for the 2014-2020 period: more than 4 million people were offered mobility opportunities, including almost 2 million students in higher education.

ERASMUS+ highlights

  • The opportunity to experience an immersive stay abroad. Available from the age of 14 for stays of between two and twelve months, the minimum stay can be reduced to fifteen days for apprenticeships, or three months for post-bac studies. This unique experience enables everyone to consolidate what they’ve learned, meet new people and add to their CVs.
  • Help to finance your stay. For example, the Community grant is reserved for ERASMUS+ students and is subject to attribution. This grant helps to cover tuition fees and the costs of a stay for study or work experience. The amount varies according to destination and length of stay, and can be as much as 450 euros per month (can be combined with the CROUS scholarship). Applications for this scholarship must be submitted to the applicant’s school.

A unique opportunity to open up to the world!

Ireland has been participating in the program since its inception in 1987. Of the 20,000 French students who come to study in the country every year, almost 1,300 benefit from this program. Ireland ranks sixth among Erasmus+ host countries, behind Sweden and Italy.

Some of the advantages of living in Ireland as part of Erasmus+ include:

  • access to world-renowned universities , including the top three: University of Dublin, University of Limerick and University of Cork;
  • free university tuition: valid up to Bachelor’s level (from Master’s level upwards, tuition fees can cost several thousand euros a year);
  • the opportunity to learn or improve English on a daily basis;
  • professional opportunities in international companies (provided you have a good level of English and qualifying qualifications).

…. not to mention the variety of beers to (re)discover: according to beer lovers, the pleasure of enjoying a pint is increased tenfold after a hard day’s work (in moderation, of course)!

In short, choosing Ireland as your destination for an Erasmus+ stay means offering yourself an ideal living environment for studying and working, but also for going out and having fun, between tasting local products, going to concerts and discovering unusual places and magnificent landscapes!
