Prudence is the mother of safety: this adage is no exception when it comes to hiking, whatever your level. Here are a few tips for safe walking in Ireland!

Safe hiking in Ireland

Don’t neglect your equipment!

Make sure you have the right equipment for walking in Ireland: it will save you a few inconveniences. Among the equipment you’ll need, don’t forget to take along:

  • good walking shoes and several pairs of socks
  • a sweater (the climate is particularly changeable in Ireland)
  • a waterproof windbreaker
  • a cap or bonnet, depending on the season
  • several liters of water per person and enough to eat
  • a card
  • a compass
  • a first-aid kit with the bare essentials (compresses, bandages, disinfectant, cream for cuts, etc.)

Tips for walking

Beyond your backpack, remember to observe a few common-sense rules.

Never go hiking alone. At least 2 or 3 people are needed to progress safely. The presence of a guide can be a plus, allowing you to discover the region from a more relevant angle.

So don’t hesitate to let the local Visitor Centre know when you’re about to start hiking. One more safety feature!

Finally, don’t hesitate to ask for their advice, to choose the circuit best suited to your physical ability. Never assume your level of fitness: sometimes a short walk is better than a long, ill-judged hike where you’ll be on the verge of exhaustion!

Enjoy your walk!
