Smartphone applications, cab parking zones... Discover our top tips!

With today’s technologies, ordering a cab in Ireland has become an experience that couldn’t be easier! Whether you’re running an errand around town, getting to the airport or taking a trip to the countryside, the options are endless and have become child’s play! On one condition: know how to do it, and what pitfalls to avoid! To make your life easier, here are a few tips to ensure you find a cab easily and enjoy a smooth journey through Ireland’s roads.

How do I find a cab in Ireland?

Option 1: Stop a car in the street

In Ireland, there are several ways to order a cab. The traditional method is to hail a cab on the street. In big cities like Dublin, Cork or Galway, cabs are easily recognized by their illuminated signs on the roof. If the light is on, the cab is free. Simply raise your hand, wait for it to stop and you’re done!

All you have to do is negotiate the route, price and conditions with them. While some operate on a flat-rate basis, others are taxi-meters, estimating the final bill according to the number of kilometers driven.

Don’t hesitate to ask how it works before you get on board: this will allow you to agree with the driver and avoid misunderstandings.

Option 2: Book your cab by phone

For those who prefer a little more planning, cab companies offer telephone booking services. All you need to do is contact a local company and give them your contact details, as well as the time and place of pick-up.

Some of the leading companies in Ireland include Dublin City Taxi, National Radio Cabs and Lynk Taxis. It’s always a good idea to have a few phone numbers to hand, especially if you’re traveling outside the big cities where cabs may be less plentiful.

Option 3: Smartphone applications

Another very practical option is the use of mobile applications. Applications such as Free Now and MyTaxi (now merged under the Free Now name), Lynk Taxis, VIP Taxis, and Cab2000 are very popular and allow you to book a cab in just a few clicks. Of course, there’s also the Uber app for travel.

You can see which cabs are available nearby, get a price estimate and track your driver’s arrival in real time.

The app also accepts card payments, which can be very handy if you don’t carry cash.

In our opinion, this is the most reliable and effective option. The service is turnkey, and provides real comfort for travelers (especially if you’re not at ease with the English language).

Option No. 4: Go to cab parking areas

Cab ranks are also a reliable option, especially in urban areas. They are often located near airports, railway stations, shopping malls and large public squares. Just go to a taxi rank and hop into the first available cab. This is particularly useful if you’re in a hurry or have a lot of luggage.
