Umbrellas in Ireland: your false friend!

No surprise there: in Ireland, rain is a regular occurrence… That’s why it’s so important to be well-equipped to cope with both light drizzle and heavy downpours! But beware: many travellers make the fatal mistake of taking an umbrella with them… While this may seem like a good idea at first glance, it could well become unpleasant to use on a daily basis.
Explanations.

The umbrella in Ireland

An accessory unsuited to the Irish climate and to travel

You’ll soon realize that very few Irish people face the rain armed only with an umbrella. The reason is simple: Irish rain can take on many forms, from a simple drizzle to a heavy shower, to horizontal rain accompanied by gusts of wind that are ready to skin you like an ox!

As a result, you’ll find yourself drenched… with an out-of-order umbrella, where the frames have potentially broken. Not to mention the hassle of having to carry it with you at all times, and getting rid of it as soon as you enter a pub, museum or other local attraction. Of course, there are small folding models that are easy to store… but they’ll still be full of water, so they’re not easy to store in a bag (unless you have a plastic bag handy).

So what’s the solution?

You don’t have to look far: a windbreaker, kway or coat are much better allies than a traditional umbrella. Hooded garments have the advantage of being practical and not bulky (since they’re worn on your back!).

Above all, choose a water-repellent fabric, if possible with a warm lining: you’ll appreciate its comfort on any occasion, whether facing the ocean in front of the Cliffs of Moher or in the middle of Dublin city center! It’s the most efficient way of staying dry without having to carry around a useless gadget.

Finally, don’t forget that the Irish climate is changeable: you can experience sunny days punctuated by occasional showers. So don’t leave home without your rain gear: it can be very useful in all circumstances!
