Trinity College Dublin’s old library is due to close its doors next year for three years of restoration work. In just over a year’s time, the establishment will close its doors, preventing travelers from discovering one of Ireland’s most beautiful libraries… and its famous Book of Kells ! If you, too, don’t want to miss out on a place like this, we recommend you hurry: you’ve got until October 2023!
It’s impossible to visit Dublin without seeing the famous and historic old Trinity College Library! Loaded with history, it’s a sensational experience to be had at least once in your life!
The premises have been in use since 1732. The library contains some of Ireland’s oldest books, including the sensational Book of Kells, a medieval manuscript calligraphed and illuminated by hand.
Its famous oak shelves house a collection of over 200,000 books. Priceless treasures!
Nicknamed the“Harry Potter Library” because of its resemblance to the world of the films, the room is 65 meters long and lined with marble busts of notable writers and philosophers. The Long Room houses the last remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Republic of Ireland and the Trinity College harp, which dates back to the 15th century, making it the oldest harp in Ireland!
As you can see, the Trinity College Library is a major site not to be missed when discovering the Irish capital!
But there is a certain urgency to discover it. The library will soon be closing its doors… for three years! A vast restoration project was decided on last April… which will result in a temporary, but rather lengthy closure, preventing any tourist visits!
The project will cost the modest sum of 90 million euros. It will work to modernize the techniques used to preserve stored works, and will focus its efforts on the risk of fire in the building. It’s a responsible choice that will ensure greater safety for this historic building… and preserve it for future generations!
The library plans to remain in operation for another year before closing for renovation. If you don’t want to miss out on such a treasure, now’s the time to make a detour to Dublin!
