Every 10 years, UNESCO calls on countries around the world to add exceptional sites to its famous list of unforgettable places. And Ireland wasted no time in applying, presenting three of its major tourist sites as potential UNESCO World Heritage Sites! As a reminder, the Cliffs of Moher, the Giant’s Causeway and the Newgrange site are already among the most beautiful sites listed by UNESCO!
Ireland has always possessed breathtaking treasures… And some of them are still unknown to the general public!
That’s why the Emerald Isle had the idea of applying to UNESCO to present 3 additional major tourist sites, to be added to the existing list of the world’s most beautiful places…
But what are these exceptional new locations for Ireland?

County Sligo is home to a vast complex of prehistoric tombs set on an imposing hill. These buildings are corridor tombs that are still in remarkably good condition today.
There are many myths and legends surrounding the place. As for the tombs, they can be visited, creating fascination and admiration.

The other candidate site is on Valentia Island, famous for having linked Canada with the first transatlantic submarine telegraph cable. With a distance of 3220km between the 2 points, the site is historically remarkable!

As you’re sure to know, Ireland has a long and distinguished history when it comes to kings. The country also boasts countless exceptional royal sites!
In its application, Ireland presented a list of royal sites that could be included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Here’s the list:
All these sites are potentially compatible with UNESCO’s requirements for inclusion on the official list of world sites. All that’s left now is to carefully study these applications, check that they fully comply with the current charter, and decide on their future!
