County Laois is a region located in the province of Leinster. Considered one of the smallest counties in Ireland, it is said to have been created in 1556 by Queen Mary I of England under the name Queen’s County. The name Laois was only given to the county after the War of Independence (1919-1921), to mark the break with England. Although somewhat less touristic than other Irish counties, Laois is mainly a rural area, living off agriculture and livestock farming. Life here is calm and peaceful, and the region has a unique charm, worth discovering if you want to delve into a deep and authentic Ireland.
