Kildare

Kildare is a picturesque Irish town in the province of Leinster, in County Kildare to be precise. Contrary to appearances, the town is not the county capital (Naas is), but it does offer some superb places to discover. Situated not far from Dublin, Kildare is often considered a suburb in its own right of the Dublin conurbation, and as such benefits from a strong cultural dynamism… Kildare is particularly renowned for its horse-racing events…

History of Kildare

A town marked by Christianity

Kildare is reputed to be the birthplace of St. Brigid (451-525), patron saint of Ireland. Born in Kildare in 451, she dedicated her life to Christianity. She founded the first mixed convent in the town, welcoming monks and nuns.

Brigitte’s actions soon made her a leading figure in the town, which gradually expanded around the convent.

Even today, the saint is a prominent figure in the town of Kildare.
