Among the many sites that attract urban exploration enthusiasts in Ireland, the Abandoned Heatherside Hospital takes pride of place. This abandoned site, steeped in history and emotion, offers an unforgettable urbex experience. So if you’re not the type to shudder in front of an abandoned place, here’s what awaits you if you explore the silent corridors and deserted rooms of this exceptional site.

History of Abandoned Heatherside Hospital

A medical establishment in operation for 101 years!

Built in 1909, the abandoned Heatherside Hospital was used as a tuberculosis sanatorium until 1957. In 1958, the site was transformed into a mental health hospital, specializing in psychogeriatrics.

Unfortunately, the company’s history hasn’t always been rosy. In 2006, the Abandoned Heatherside Hospital was sadly in the news after a schizophrenic patient, Hannah Comber, died after being accidentally suffocated by a restraint belt while being cared for by nursing staff.

Although an investigation concluded that it was an unfortunate accident, the case precipitated the hospital’s closure. As a result, the facility was forced to close its doors in 2010 and was eventually abandoned.

Since then, the site has suffered the ravages of time. Totally abandoned, it is the object of curiosity for urban explorers…

What can we expect?

Let’s face it: the Abandoned Heatherside Hospital seems to have been abandoned in a hurry. Its current state even suggests that the place resembles apocalyptic films where zombie attacks have decimated everything!

But rest assured: you won’t find any zombies. Just furnished rooms and a succession of corridors. On the agenda: dust, damaged furniture, vintage posters on the walls, and remnants of medical equipment. The floor, littered with debris and dirt, suggests that the site has been visited several times.

From hospital rooms to operating theatres, you can discover objects that have been left behind.

The hospital also includes an abandoned church (with a remarkable wooden roof) and a number of dwellings that served as residences for the nursing staff of the time.

Tips for successful exploration

Safety first

Fascinating though it is, the Abandoned Heatherside Hospital is an abandoned, and therefore potentially dangerous, place. It’s imperative to take safety precautions, such as using flashlights, wearing sturdy shoes and, in some cases, a helmet.

Respect for the environment and the law

It’s crucial to respect the property and make sure you have the necessary authorizations to enter the site. The aim of urbex is to preserve and document, not to vandalize or steal.

Note: Make sure you obtain all the necessary permissions and follow the rules and regulations in force for exploring abandoned sites.
