Visit Ashtown Castle

A restored castle in the heart of Dublin’s Phoenix Park!

Located in the heart of Dublin, Ashtown Castle is believed to have been built in 1430. Magnificent, it still displays the typical characteristics of medieval Ireland, with its fortified walls and Anglo-Norman style.

Easy to find, it takes the form of a fortified tower-house, with 3 storeys and defensive windows.

For the record, it was not discovered until later: the castle was initially hidden by a much larger castle. A victim of dry rot, Dublin had it demolished, only to discover the Ashtown Castle inside in a sorry state. Aware of the castle’s historic value, the city decided to renovate it and transform it into a visitor center for Phoenix Park.

You can discover it on a stroll through the park, and enter the first floor. You can ask for more information on site, whether about the history of the castle, or about walking tours in Phoenix Park. You’ll find stonework and a medieval ambience to give you a change of scene while you’re still in the heart of Dublin! The staff are very welcoming, and will do their utmost to make sure you have a great time in the park!
