Athlone Castle is a magnificent Irish fortress built in the town of Athlone (Co. of Westmeath). Still intact today, the castle has endured many battles, and seen great historical figures such as Brian Boru and Oliver Cromwell enter its walls.
Athlone Castle was originally a simple motte castrale, built around the 9th century. It was only over the years that the castle was destroyed, modified and enlarged several times, before finally becoming an Anglo-Norman castle in the 12th century. Its location was intended to be strategic, enabling the inhabitants to watch over a narrow passage of the Shannon, and thus better regulate trade and repel potential enemies.
Historically speaking, Athlone Castle is famous for having welcomed within its walls the great Irish king Brian Boru, one of Ireland’s most illustrious kings. The latter had then taken possession of Athlone and decided to sit in the fortress for a few months.
Athlone Castle as we know it today was damaged by a French fleet attack in the 13th century. Nonetheless, the château remains in relatively good condition today.
Athlone Castle is closed to visitors for 2010 due to renovations. However, it is due to reopen by 2011.
However, when it reopens, you’ll be able to discover its double perimeter wall, its Anglo-Norman style and its Napoleonic-style extensions. The château’s banqueting halls and bedrooms are magnificently decorated with precious carpets and paintings from all periods (mainly Napoleonic).
