A corridor tomb rich in archaeological remains!

If you love megaliths and their mysteries, then don’t miss Audleystown, a megalithic site located northwest of Castle Ward and less than a mile from the village of Strangford. Dating from the Neolithic period, it takes the form of a 27-meter-long dry-stone corridor, formerly covered by a roof that has since collapsed. This corridor then leads to 4 burial chambers, each 10 meters long.

The site is fairly well preserved, and was discovered in 1946 by a farmer tilling his field. Considered a remarkable site, Audleystown was excavated in 1952, unearthing numerous human bones (both cremated and uncremated), teeth, mammal bones and ancient traces of charcoal. Added to this are more than 15 pieces of pottery shattered by the collapsing roof, arrowheads and a javelin. A breakthrough for archaeological research!

According to the discoveries made, more than 34 people of both sexes and all ages would have rested within these tombs. The bones would have been first detailed, then scattered before being distributed in each room: this is why bones belonging to one and the same individual were found in each room.
