History of Ballinesker beach

A beach revealed by Hollywood cinema!

The film

The film “Saving Private Ryan” was shot in Ireland

Ballinesker beach, with its stretches of golden sand and picturesque dunes, has long been a favorite of Wexford’s residents. Its history is rich in tales of fishermen, walkers and holidaymakers who have all found refuge on its shores.

However, it was in 1997 that Ballinesker made cinema history.

Steven Spielberg, looking for a suitable location to shoot the crucial scenes of the Normandy landings for his film“Saving Private Ryan“, chose Ballinesker for its resemblance to Omaha Beach.

The site proved more convenient for shooting than the historic Normandy beach. The reason: its almost identical appearance, simplified logistics (compared to France), and the tax advantages of the time.

For several weeks, this quiet beach was transformed into an intensive battlefield. Local residents were even requisitioned to act as extras in the battle, playing American and German soldiers in scenes of great violence.

The conditions were sometimes difficult, mixing false explosions, sand and humidity… which made for a daring challenge!

But on screen, the result is splendid, and the Irish beach has more than lived up to its promise.

With the help of the Irish infrastructure, Steven Spielberg was able to make one of his greatest films ever!

This period of filming left an indelible mark on the local community. Local residents still remember with pride their contribution to this iconic film.
