If you like caves, we recommend a visit to Bruce Cave, located on Rathlin Island in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It’s located right in the heart of the island’s cliffs, giving it that extra touch of cachet!
Bruce’s grotto lies beneath the island’s eastern lighthouse. It’s named after Robert the Bruce, a 13th-century Scottish king who hid here in 1306 after his defeat by the English at Perth.
Legend has it that the warrior observed a spider trying repeatedly to reach the roof of the cave, until it succeeded. Inspired by the spider’s determination, Robert the Bruce later returned to Scotland to defeat his enemies, winning the Scottish throne at the Battle of Bannockburn.
The cave is open to visitors from Easter to September. You’ll find some lovely underground galleries, bathed in a dark, damp atmosphere. The proximity of the ocean adds an extra charm to the place.
Access is by boat only. Abhàinn cruises offers this type of excursion. Just hop aboard their RHIB boat in Ballycastle. And you can explore the coastline of Rathlin Island, its lighthouse and its many remarkable sites.
When you reach Bruce’s cave, you’ll be captivated by the seabirds evolving inside. The water keeps slipping over the rocks and overflows into the ocean… The show is magnificent!
Be on the lookout for seals!
Take a two-hour boat trip to discover the island and its grotto.
