Castle Leslie is a superb Irish castle, located in the village of Glaslough in County Monaghan. Built in 1870 for Sir John Leslie, the castle has more the look of a Scottish manor house. According to numerous testimonials, the place is haunted: every room has been the scene of strange apparitions!
A little austere, the manor house extends over 400 hectares of lakes, forests and wooded parkland. Magnificent, it was built in the pure Scottish architectural tradition (quite a feat for a manor house in Ireland!). But the manor knows how to mix styles to perfection: its exterior architecture contrasts sharply with its interior decoration, directly inspired by the Italian Renaissance, while the gardens are straight out of the French Renaissance!
Strange indeed, but the charm and combination of the 3 styles works, making this a manor house with character.
Today, the manor is still owned by the Leslie family, who use it as a bed & breakfast. The lucky ones will be able to treat themselves to a charming room in the manor’s former hunting lodge. A charming place, which unfortunately won’t suit all budgets (the owners have equipped it with a spa, bar and restaurant).
The site is only accessible to guests of the manor. For the rest of you, Castle Leslie can only be admired from the road… Too bad…
For the record, it was in this castle that former Beatles member Paul McCarthney chose to marry Heather Mills. There’s also a strange legend surrounding the castle: some claim to have observed ghostly apparitions in the manor’s rooms. The most famous is in the Red Room, where a certain soldier known as “Norman Leslie” is said to have been spotted on numerous occasions. The latter is said to have haunted the manor since his death in 1914, after dying in the trenches in France!
