Irish castles
Le Clifden castle - nora.warschewski - cc

Clifden Castle is an ancient ruined manor house located to the west of the town of Clifden in Ireland. Lost in the middle of nowhere, on a small peninsula, the castle stands side by side with greenery and the fury of the ocean, which beats against the rocks less than a kilometer away. A castle in the heart of Ireland’s sublime landscapes, a must-see!

A neo-Gothic castle in ruins

Built in 1818 by John D’Arcy (founder of the village of Clifden), the castle was constructed in the neo-Gothic style, which was very fashionable in the 1800s. This magnificent château features a round tower to the southeast, a square tower and an entrance tower with two round turrets.
However, the château also boasts more recent renovations and ornamentation, dating from the 1850s/1860s, added by the Eyre family, who reclaimed the château on the death of John D’Arcy.

The estate also includes a large footbridge, built in 1815 in medieval style. In addition, the first owner had several menhirs erected on the property, one of which is thought to have been carved by prehistoric man.

It’s a fascinating, over-the-top place with a charm all of its own! It has to be said that some parts of the castle are in ruins, and have been overgrown by vegetation. The result is a building of romantic charm, straight out of the ages… whose proximity to the sea reinforces its dramatic and mysterious aura.

In short, a unique place to discover, with free admission.

Be careful, though: we recommend that you avoid entering the castle grounds, as the architecture remains fragile, and it would be a shame to injure yourself or damage this magnificent castle, a vestige of a forgotten heritage!
