How do I get there?

  • By bus:
    • From Galway: 4 buses per day Monday to Saturday (2 buses on Sunday). Journey: 1h30
    • From Westport: 1 bus per day via Leenane Monday to Saturday. Journey: 1h30
    • From Letterfrack: 4 buses per day (same line as from Galway)

Clifden

Clifden (An Clochán in Gaelic) is a charming small town in Connemara, Ireland. Extremely popular with tourists in summer, it attracts thousands of visitors each year who stroll through its town center, admire its colorful houses, and explore the wonders of Connemara. An ideal town to use as a base for exploration: stay overnight and discover the surroundings by day!

History of Clifden

A town famous for its former telegraph station

Clifden is said to have been founded by John d’Arcy in the 19th century and only truly flourished in the 20th century when Guglielmo Marconi installed a wireless telegraph station there. A first for the time and region!

This telegraph station allowed the town to become an important telecommunications center.

Visiting Clifden

Clifden enjoys a perfect geographical location: situated in the heart of Connemara, the town is an ideal base for overnight stays and exploring the region’s wonders over several days.

Very pleasant and enjoyable, Clifden has a town center perfect for strolling, shopping, and experiencing a change of scenery. You will discover many delightful addresses as well as artisanal shops that might tempt you to spend!

The area is full of accommodations (hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, campsites) and restaurants/Irish pubs. A chance to experience the unique Irish hospitality while enjoying a pint at the pub, then tasting one of the traditional dishes of Irish cuisine!

If you want to leave the town, be sure not to miss the Sky Road, an iconic Connemara route winding between land and sea. The landscapes are breathtaking! Best done by car, bus, or preferably by bike!

Also, don’t miss the beauties offered by Clifden Bay, an Irish bay beloved by lovers of beautiful beaches and water sports.

Don’t miss Clifden Castle either: a ruined castle with a dark and enigmatic charm!

Finally, 20 km from Clifden is Kylemore Abbey and its castle. These are the most famous and popular attractions in Connemara! A must-see!
