If you’re passing by Carraroe and fancy a spot of unspoilt beach action, then take a trip to Coral Strand.
This beach, between sand and rock, offers a typical view of the surrounding area, between sea and green expanses. The beach is surrounded by breathtaking coastal scenery, with hills, sea-sculpted rocks and magnificent views of the Aran Islands in the distance. It’s an ideal place for hiking and landscape photography.
Note, however, that its name “Coral Strand” is inaccurate: the use of the term “coral” does not refer to a beach consisting of genuine coral sand, but rather to a calcified algae called “maёrl”.
Be that as it may, the waters of Coral Strand are exceptionally clear, making it a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving.
The spot is also popular with surfers, but beware of the weather. There can be swell in bad weather!
Coral Strand is within easy driving distance of Galway. You can also take a bus to Carraroe and walk to the beach from the village.
