The CushendunCaves are located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Although very old, they have only become public knowledge since the broadcast of the “Game of Thrones” series (the Iron Throne), which filmed some emblematic scenes in the caves. A must-see for fans and lovers of unsuspected tourist treasures!
The Cushendun Caves are pretty easy to get to. Close to Cushendun beach, they can be explored free of charge, without a guide or prior authorization.
We owe their current geological state to over 400 million years of natural erosion! Its numerous rock cavities have all been naturally carved out by water and time. This gives access to many humid, shady micro-galleries.
The location is magnificent, overlooking the beach. The cave is wide and rather high. Shallow, though. Allow no more than a quarter of an hour for the tour.
Whatever the case, the galleries have a dark, mysterious charm: the walls are fascinating, carved naturally by humidity, salt and the proximity of the ocean. The walls at the entrance are even inhabited by a few mussels and other cockles. It’s a pleasure to explore! An opportunity to measure the natural force of erosion.
For the record, it was at Cushenden Caves that Hollywood production company HBO filmed a number of scenes from the famous Game of Thrones series. It is here that Melisandre gives birth to the terrible shadow killer. A must-see scene for fans of the series!
Access to the cave is free and open all year round. However, it’s best to visit on a fine day when the sea is calm: otherwise, the natural light won’t illuminate the cave sufficiently, and the turbulence of the sea will make the visit unpleasant.
