For football fans, don’t miss Dalymount Park, Dublin’s famous soccer stadium. Considered the home of Irish soccer, the stadium has played host to some of the country’s greatest teams, including the All-Ireland team, Irish Cup finals and European Cup matches. It’s a great place to play sports, if you like to tease the turf with your cleats!
Dalymount Park was originally a vegetable garden, known as Pisser Dignam’s Field.
It was finally bought by the Bohemains FC soccer team in the early 1900s and turned into a soccer stadium. The first match played within its walls took place on September 7, 1901, pitting Shelbourne FC against Bohemians FC, in front of 5,000 spectators.
The stadium hosted its first international match in March 1904, pitting Ireland against Scotland. The stadium soon saw record crowds, sometimes reaching 40,000 for a single match. But the stadium soon reached its limits in terms of capacity, and the standards of the venue were often the subject of controversy.
As a result of these major drawbacks, Dalymount Park was relegated to the background, in favor of Lansdowne Road, another Dublin stadium with greater capacity and better safety standards. The Dalymount stadium then saw its capacity dwindle to just 22,000 in 1985.
Since then, the stadium has hosted fewer than 10 major matches. Nowadays, only Bohemians FC matches are played there…
What better way to discover a soccer stadium than by attending one of the local club’s matches? Bohemians FC regularly organize sports matches with other Irish teams, and their quality of play can be well worth the effort!
Entrance fees are low, reaching no more than €25 per person depending on placement. It’s a great way to soak up the inimitable atmosphere of Dalymount Park!
