Adare’s Desmond Castle (not to be confused with Kinsale’s Desmond Castle) is considered one of the finest examples of a medieval castle in the region. Situated on the banks of the River Maigue, the castle was once owned by the Earls of Desmond, and still possesses an exceptional charm!

A ruined castle at the foot of a river

Desmond Castle is an Irish fortress built in the 12th century. Built at the foot of the River Maigue, this castle was once strategically located to control all comings and goings on the river. Now totally in ruins, it has an authentic, picturesque charm! It comprises a square keep, a fortified quarter surrounded by a defensive moat, and former rooms and outbuildings that once housed bedrooms, a kitchen and a local bakery.

A major program of conservation and restoration work has recently been completed, allowing public access. Guided tours are available on request, and you can stroll along its crumbling ramparts, admiring the beauty of its architecture! The visit is free and rather rustic!
