The Adare Franciscan Friary

Irish abbeys and monasteries

Do you like old ruined monasteries? You’re in for a treat with Adare Franciscan Friary. This is a former Franciscan convent founded in 1454 by Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald and Johanna Fitzgerald (Anglo-Normans, Earls of Kildare). This magnificent castle is located on the grounds of Desmond Castle, an equally touristic medieval castle! It’s a popular spot, appreciated for its beauty straight out of the ages. A must-see if you’re passing through!

Visit the Adare Franciscan Friary

A building with authentic charm!

The Franciscan convent of Adare is located on the east bank of the River Maigue, opposite the medieval castle of the Counts of Desmond. Its unique location on the Adare Manor golf course means you can admire it up close while teasing the green!

And let’s face it: the building may well distract you from your swing! The beauty of its ruins is indescribable! The remains have stood the test of time quite well, and offer a typical sight of the country’s old convents and monasteries!

Starting with its slender bell tower, which seems to stand unperturbed through the centuries. Not to mention the beauty of the cloister’s arcade, funerary niches, fireplaces and the stone sculpture of Saint Francis!

We remain fascinated by the finesse of the architecture in place. By the historical atmosphere of the place. The building seems to live outside time and space. A unique experience!

All the more so when you consider that the Adare Franciscan Friary is in fact one of the most structurally complete Franciscan foundations in Ireland. A fact that makes the building particularly interesting for Irish archaeologists and historians, who regularly study it!

Don’t hesitate to take the time to visit. We recommend not venturing too close to the walls (which can be fragile). So keep your distance and avoid rubbing backpacks and coats near the construction.
